Who Are We?

We’re people just like you

THE LEXICON OF SUSTAINABILITY™ is a empowering change based on a simple premise: people will contribute to a more sustainable future if they know and understand the most basic terms and principles that define sustainability.

“We are dedicated to restoring the true meaning of sustainability ~ with words. We are the first generation to recognize that we are living within the confines of finite natural resources. And, by shining a light on the people who are showing us all the path to solutions, we can all learn how to cooperate and make the changes we need to make our home, this beautiful planet, thrive.”

~ Douglas and Laura

A multi-platform approach to sustainability

“The Lexicon of Sustainability™ makes food and ag jargon accessible — and beautiful. This innovative project is a great way to help educate the fast-growing group of people who want to eat better but aren’t sure quite how.”

Chip Giller – Founder and CEO, GRIST.ORG

Sustainable Food and Farming Terms

Nearly two hundred leaders in food and farming across the USA have contributed their valued experiences to our rapidly growing Lexicon of Sustainability™.

Check out our list of SELECTED THOUGHT LEADERS.

By illuminating the vocabulary of sustainable agriculture, and with it the conversation about America’s rapidly evolving food culture, the Lexicon of Sustainability™ educates, engages and activates people to pay closer attention to how they eat, what they buy, and where their responsibility begins for creating a healthier, safer food system in America.

A Short Film Series for PBS

“KNOW YOUR FOOD” is a short film series which introduces viewers to the terms and principles that enable them to be more responsible, sustainably-minded consumers.

Filmmakers Douglas Gayeton and Laura Howard-Gayeton have turned their pioneering method of mixing hand-written text with photo collage into a stunning collection of short films that mix animation by Pier Giorgio Provenzano with live action interviews with food producers from across the country.

The Lexicon of Sustainability™ shorts are a RUMPLEFARM production, funded and presented by ITVS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with residual funding through a crowdsourced platform.

Helping Students Discover Their Local Food Systems

The Lexicon of Sustainability’s PROJECT LOCALIZE food literacy initiative shows teachers and students how to identify and promote sustainable economic, cultural and social progress in their communities.

LOCALIZE: AMES, IOWA was led by one motivated teacher and his 11th grade class. The students mapped their local food system, interviewed producers, farmers, processors and key stakeholders at the local level, then created artworks illustrating what sustainability looks like in Iowa.

In October 2013 The Lexicon brought these students’ artworks to Washington DC. We invited members of Congress and educational leaders to visit the public debut of this information art project.
